Save this reminder for next time you’re feeling anxious

🍋 🍊 🍋 🍊 🍋

Did you know that CITRUS FRUIT can help keep you calm?

They are natures little bundles of peace. The bitter taste of citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruit can switch on a relaxed state through your vagus nerve and parasympathetic nervous system - your rest and digest system.

When we are stressed, anxious and in a panic our sympathetic nervous system (fight, flight or freeze) goes into overdrive trying to protect us from danger. Sensory intervention like smelling or eating citrus can help ground us and bring us back to the present moment.

Vitamin C also helps nourish our adrenal glands which pump out adrenaline when we feel highly anxious.

Great ways to enjoy citrus is sliced in chilled water, juiced, in salad dressings, in marinades or eaten on their own.

When you’re trying to implement a healthy lifestyle start with small changes that are personalised to you and that you can be consistent with.

Save these ideas as a reminder for later ✨

🌿Move in a way that’s fun for you
Exercise should be for enjoyment not punishment. When you make this the purpose you may actually start to look forward to it rather than try everything in your being to avoid it.

🌿Enjoy ALL the foods
Food is more than fuel. It’s there to nourish, and to bring joy and community connection. It has no moral value. So instead of grouping foods as “good” and “bad”, and limiting yourself thinking about foods you can’t eat, start thinking about the beautiful array of foods that you can eat. Start to eat mindfully, being fully present savouring each bite you take.

🌿Be intentional with self-care
Make a date with yourself and schedule it like you would any other appointment. Use this time to do something you love that helps you destress and grounds you even during the busiest of seasons.

🌿Work to your own schedule and pace
If you don’t have a lot of time, that’s ok. If you can’t meal prep a weeks worth of food, no problem. Choose one meal and prep that. If you don’t like cooking but want to cut out ordering take out. Choose one night a week that you’ll cook something. Small consistent changes build healthy habits and are what count in the long run.

🌿Check in with yourself
Regularly check in with yourself and evaluate what is or isn’t working. If something is too difficult it’s ok to change it up. If you’re not able to maintain the change or it’s not supporting you the way you thought it would it’s ok to adjust, course correct, start again and ask for help.

Let me know how you implement a healthy lifestyle every day!

Are you staying hydrated this winter?

During winter, it’s a bit harder to drink water as there is no outside force (eg: summer heat) to remind is to drink

However, dehydration isn’t just something that occurs when it’s hot. You could be feeling it’s effects right now

Water is critical for our bodies all year round and signs of dehydration can include
- headaches
- dry skin
- chapped/cracked lips
- thirst

Dehydration can also impact our mood and energy levels. That’s because when you’re dehydrated your blood is actually thicker, snd moves slowly around your body. Imagine slow thick, blood moving around your brain.

Do you notice an immediate change in brain fog, energy levels and motivation when drink a glass of water? Does that headache start to ease?

Making sure you stay hydrated throughout the day can make such a big difference to how you feel by the end of it

If you struggle to drink more water during these winter months here’s some tips for you

💧Keep it Hot
Drink tea, warm water with lemon and honey, or some bone broth. All of these are suitable ways to stay hydrated

💧Set a Reminder
It’s easy to drink water after a workout, but if you’re struggling to do it throughout your day then set yourself a reminder. There’s plenty of phone and computer apps that can help you with this. Another way is to keep it at the forefront of your mind. Keep a water bottle on your desk as you work or drink a glass on either side of your cup of coffee

💧Make it a Game
Set yourself a goal of drinking 2L of water a day, and if at the end of the week you hit it, reward yourself

💧Add some Flavour
I know a few people who just don’t drink water because of it’s neutral taste. By adding some fruit and herbs such a lemons, cucumbers, berries, oranges, limes and mint can add a delicious refreshing flavour to you water

Let me know if you think you drink enough water during your day?

    MONDAY’S MINDFUL EATING TIP

If you’re ready to cultivate a healthy relationship with food then these tips are for you

It can be so hard when we have diet culture constantly being thrown in our face, dictating to us what food should be deemed as “good” and “bad” or “clean” and “dirty”. This confusion often leads to us setting ourselves strict food rules

I know it did for me and this caused me to really stress over my food and food choices. This lead to me using a lot of unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with the feelings I was experiencing

I’m not sure if you’ve been there, or if you’re there now. However, once I started to develop a healthier relationship with food, I was able to start cultivating balance in not only my food choices, but in my life choices as well

It’s difficult to define a ‘healthy relationship with food’ because in itself ‘healthy’ is different for everyone

I’ve just posted a new blog on what a healthy relationship with food can look like. If you want to know more head on over to my website

While you’re there, get excited because I’ve officially launched my Free 7-Day Mindful Eating Challenge

This challenge is designed for anyone who:
✨might be a little bit overwhelmed right now when it comes to eating
✨has struggled with diets or the binge-restrict cycle
✨is just simply out of tune with their body

If that is you (and even if it's not) and you are ready to learn how to heal your relationship with food, you can sign up by visiting the link in my bio 🙏🏼

Your regular scheduled posts of delicious recipes and nutrition facts will be back shortly. However, I’m of the belief that we need to be looking after our physical, mental and spiritual health now more than ever.

If we don’t put ourselves first, how can we serve others? How can we serve from an empty cup?

So this is your loving reminder to check in with yourself and add in some self care to your routine this week.

What does self care look like you ask?

✨resting, sleeping in and relaxing
✨expressing gratitude
✨moving your body
✨taking a nice long bath
✨reading your favourite book
✨chatting to a loved one
✨snuggling with you pet
✨slowing down

There are so many way to incorporate some self care into your weekend.

How will you be taking care of yourself this weekend?

    7 Keys to Building Resilience

Resilience is seen as an intuitive response to adversity and/or stress across the lifespan. When we have the opportunity to adapt to any situation that we may face, we are building resilience. When we fail at something, and bounce right back because of the strength within us, we are being resilient. Resilience gives us the power and strength that we need to overcome setbacks that we may face.

By strengthening the pillars that make up resilience, we become more resilient.

The five pillars are:
1. Self Awareness
2. Mindfulness
3. Self Care
4. Positive Relationships
5. Purpose

I decided to break these down a little further for you as my 7 keys to building resilience.

1. Learn to be present
Become aware of all that is around you, remain calm and live in the moment.

2. Embrace Change
Being flexible is essential to resilience. Learn to adapt and accept what is.

3. Nourish Yourself
We need a well nourished mind and body to ensure we can cope with difficult situations we may face. Looking after yourself and your needs isn’t selfish. So carve out some time for self care. By doing this you will in turn make yourself more available to serve others.

4. Build Positive Relationships
It is so important to build relationships, even more so now as we face this global pandemic. We are made for human connection. Learn to build relationships that both allow you to give more than you take. Leave those toxic friendships behind, and cultivate real, deep and meaningful connections.

5. Be Intentional
Be purposeful in all things that you do and intentional in both word and action. You can be intentional by making thoughtful, meaningful and fulfilling choices. Start to actively engage with your life. Learn to respond instead of react, love instead of fear, embrace instead of expect and accept instead of resist.

    MONDAY’S MINDFUL EATING TIP

Well today’s tip isn’t necessarily about eating. Instead, we are going to focus on why getting enough good quality sleep is important.

Sleep is SO crucial to how we function daily on a mental, physical and emotional level.

Have you noticed how when you have poor quality sleep you’re grumpy, struggle to concentrate and most likely choose sweet sugary treats.

Sleep is such an important key for mental health. It can be so tempting to stay up late and sleep in the next day. However, breaking your routine causes so much havoc on your body.

Apart from being tired, you might find yourself not reaching your peak level when working out, easily irritated and craving a sugar hit as your energy levels slumps.

If you don’t have a sleep routine or some solid sleep hygiene rules, I can’t recommend starting to put one in place enough

Now I’m off to start my night time routine. It consists of a tea, some reading, gentle stretching and a few other things.

Yesterday I posted a new blog titled “leaning into isolation” You can read it via the link in my bio @mysimpleplate

I found myself really getting dragged down by being in lockdown. I found myself processing my thoughts and behaviours and why I did things the way I did them.

It wasn’t until I realised and acknowledged that I was causing myself pain because of my perfectionist ways and tendency to procrastinate that something shifted.

While isolation is uncomfortable I want to encourage you to lean into the discomfort. Discover something new about yourself because great things never happen on the safe side of your comfort zone 💛

    MONDAY’S MINDFUL EATING TIP

Check in with your emotions while eating

How many of us can honestly say we have never emotionally eaten something before? Whether it be reaching for the block of chocolate and wine after a long exhausting day at work, or mindlessly opening the pantry and taking whatever you can get your hands on to numb the pain you might be feeling.

Many of us either deal or have dealt with this and I can say I have too.

Mindfully checking in with our emotions around meals times can help up assess any negative emotions we might be feeling. Whether that be feelings of stress, pain, sadness, overwhelm, fear or something else.

Not only can we understand our emotions around food, but we can also determine the correlation we have between our feelings and how we are using food to cope with these feelings.

If you find that you are emotionally eating. Know that it is ok. Especially during this season we find ourselves in as a world. Anxiety, fear and stress are at an all time high among people. So take the pressure off yourself and know that it is ok.

However, it’s really important that you don’t find yourself stuck here. Stuck in a constant battle of mindlessly eating when you feel down and then feeling guilty about it. It can be a vicious cycle.

One way to remove the guilt is to put into practice actually checking in with yourself, your mind, body and your emotions.

Next time you walk over to your pantry, fridge etc. Stop, take a deep breath and ask yourself these questions (you might find it handy to keep them in a journal or in the notes app on your phone)

1. How am I feeling right now?

2. What emotions am I dealing with?

3. What situation has brought these emotions to the surface? It’s ok if you don’t have a definitive answer, but try to come up with a few reasons as to why you think you might be feeling this way

I have a question for you.

How are you going.. really?

You have probably heard it said so many times, but it’s actually ok not to be ok right now.

We are going through something that has completely shifted what we each deem as comfortable. Everything around us has changed and even the most easily adaptable person is struggling with the changes that are constantly happening in the world.

I actually was chatting with some friends recently. The conversation from them was very negative, and in some ways I would deem it as even hopeless. As much as I was trying to speak life, I could feel that everything I would say would come across as “wishful thinking”

To be honest, it was super deflating and draining. I went to bed that night super flat, and woke up the next morning feeling the same way, like I was physically defeated. That morning I made a cuppa and flicked through my journal and came across an entry I had written towards the end of Lockdown 1.0 as I like to call it.

I felt like I spoke life back into my situation and have held onto that hope ever since. As I come up to my birthday in a few weeks, I feel like now more than ever is the perfect time for self reflection on who I not only want to be on the other side of Lockdown 2.0, but who I want to be years from now.

I thought I would share some of these lessons that I learnt believing they will instil in you the same hope that rereading them instilled in me.

1. Be the better friend - initiate contact and be there because you don’t know what they are really going through right now

2. Be generous always in all ways - Generosity leads to greater joy and happiness

3. Change up your language - we may need to physical distance, but we don’t need to lose social connections

4. It’s ok to be unproductive - your value doesn’t come from your productivity

5. Your metal health matters - you can’t support others if you’re not looking after yourself

Now stop. Take a deep breath, release your shoulders and take the pressure you are feeling in this season off.

You have permission to rest in this season 💛

Happy Sunday beautiful ones 💛

    HOW GOOD IS PASTA?

I'm a bit obsessed with Pulse pasta. It's an amazing source of protein and fibre and it adds a little bit of a nutty flavour to dishes. I use @sanremopasta Pulse Pasta (not sponsored just my fave one)

One of my favourite ways to use it is in my Pasta with Baby Spinach, Green Beans and Minty Pesto Sauce. You can find the recipe link in my bio.

Any one else like me that as soon as it’s Winter, those carby cravings hit?

Well, you know what? It’s so fine to eat carbs! They' aren't the enemy!

Carbs are actually the preferred energy source for your brain and body. This is because they are quickly converted to glucose (energy) which is what your brain and body run on 💪🏼

One thing that we don't hear about often enough is that Carbs are important for the production of Serotonin - the feel good chemical which helps us regulate our moods.

Hangry is a real feeling friends 😂

So eat the carbs and be happy 😊

Discipline takes time and it takes courage.

To stop yourself in the moment and acknowledge that what you are doing isn’t working is brave. It means that you recognised that you need to change. This is good thing. It means you are growing, developing and evolving as a person which is so amazing!

I’ve spent today writing on this as I put together a blog post for next week and what I’ve concluded is that discipline requires motivation and it takes both of these to build a habit. Pretty logical conclusion hey!

But, so often we find ourselves discouraged as we try to build our discipline through changing our habits because of failure. I want to challenge you to start thinking of your failure as a success. With every mistake we make comes a new opportunity for us to learn.

Take hold of that truth today.

So during this time of Lockdown 2.0, is there a habit that you can create that will benefit you once we step outside into the world again?

It could be training yourself to wake up at the same time everyday and really being productive in your morning. Maybe it’s going on a daily walk, or setting yourself up with a calming evening routine to help you sleep better.

Learn to implement simple yet effective strategies that
1. Help you in the long term
2. Are easy for you to keep up, develop and actually make a new habit out of

This time has really taught me to be vulnerable and my authentic self. When I let go of that fear of what people might think, not only did I experience freedom but people still love me, they still connect with me, they still trust me and they still relate to me.

Vulnerability brings connection and there is no time like the present to build that connection with people, on all sorts of new levels.

Will you step out today and start to become your authentic self? 💛
